A Legacy of Compassion
Providing Low-Cost Essential Veterinary Care for Almost 20 Years
This is how it all began…
Founded in 1964 by Margaret B. Mitchell, the Bristol Humane Society has a long history of promoting animal well-being. Mitchell, who served as president for many years, left a portion of her estate to support the cause, which led to the opening of the Margaret B. Mitchell Spay/Neuter Clinic in 2005—the first of its kind in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
Since then, the clinic has performed over 200,000 surgeries and expanded its services to include low-cost vaccination clinics in 2015 and essential wellness care in 2022.
As we continue to grow, we are excited to expand our facility and parking lot in 2025 to offer accessible and low-cost veterinary care for our community’s dogs and cats.
This is us now…
Our current services include spay/neuter surgeries by appointment, Monday through Friday, helping to control the pet population and ensure healthier animals.
Additionally, we offer Wellness Services every Thursday and Friday from 9am to 4pm. On those days, walk-in clients can receive certain services and products, while scheduled appointments with our veterinarian provide care for routine physicals, minor illnesses, and general health checks. We also offer vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, heartworm prevention, dewormer, joint supplements, and more to help you keep your pets healthy and happy.
Our History
The Founding of the Margaret B. Mitchell Spay/Neuter Clinic
In 1964, Mitchell co-founded the Bristol Humane Society where she served as president for many years. When she passed away in 2003 at the age of 102, she left a portion of her estate to benefit animal well-being. The Bristol Humane Society put that bequest towards the opening of the clinic in 2005. To honor Mitchell, the clinic was respectfully and rightfully named the Margaret B. Mitchell Spay/Neuter Clinic.
Our mission
As a nonprofit organization, the mission of Bristol Humane Society is to provide accessible resources to ensure that animals are healthy and happy, and the bond between pets and their families is strengthened.
Our commitment to our region is to provide accessible, affordable, and compassionate veterinary care, as well as health and well-being support, to dogs and cats.
Through our low-cost spay/neuter and wellness clinics, we strive to support responsible pet ownership, reduce pet overpopulation, and improve the welfare of all animals in our community.
Our community outreach, pet food and supplies pantry, along with our education center, will allow us to offer a range of opportunities to further support our community.
